I think it depends on what you mean, Mickie. CMS (content management system) sites can look very professional and there's many open source ones. Personally I'd rather hand over twelve dollars for a domain name then pay a few bucks a month to host my own CMS site than go to the ad-filled free sites like geocities. In all honesty if I see something and the link is a geocities or similar type one, I don't even click it, but that's just me.
I like Joomla very much and there's many many free template designs out there that look wonderful for it. I'd choose to pay that little bit more rather than opt for a "free" site that'll be bombarded with ads you have no control over. At least with a CMS you can add your own Adsense if you want ads on it or just not have them at all.
Overall I think it's a small price to pay for a more professional looking site than a freebie. Check out www.opensourcecms.com for demos of different kinds of CMS systems if you want. It's a handy site where you can try them online without having to install anything.
P.S. I'm not affiliated with that site by the way, I just suggest it as I used it myself when I started looking into CMS as an option.
