What do people look for when they first land on your home page and how do you incorporate that into your website?

The first thing that I’m going to look for when I landed on a home page is some information which is valuable to me.  Of course, as a site owner I like information about making money online.

Thanks Choco you have given me some great advice.  I'd never thought of putting something about making money online, but this is an excellent idea because most people on the internet want to make money.  Also I think if people are not gripped by your first page then they are going to go away from your website and not come back.

Just like everything, you need a attention grabbing item. Now if you knew for sure what would grab everyones
attention you would be rich for sure.

For me it is my search item. Say I search for "Tarot" and go to a site. Then the home page has very little about tarot cards. I simply go back to my search page. I hate looking for something and then when you go to a site that pops up on the search page they have next to nothing on the subject. So many places put a ton of "key words" about their site so it pulls up often and then they have nothing on the subject.

I say if you are going to have a site about "oranges" or whatever have a site with a lot of information on the subject! I hate a site that tries to cover everything and really has nothing much on anything.

I will bookmark a site with a lot of information on something, that way I can go back and read it all. If it only has one article, I will read that one article and never go back again.

I guess that last post should have just said, find your niche, stay with it and let your homepage reflect what your really about.

Sometimes I get wordy for no reason.

Thanks for the advice hurgoll the only problem I have with this is that my site is a site about help and advice.  It covers a wide range of subjects because of the nature of the website.  I could just cover one particular subject, but I didn't really want to do it like this because it would go against the plans I have for the website.  I do understand what you mean though.  Thanks for the advice.

Your home page is the first thing people see, they judge your site on the homepage and if they don't like it, they'll just leave. It's important to have it flashy, interesting, exciting. Lot's of features.

I am glad that I read your homepage is the first thing people see because I have just paid to get my homepage designed for me.  I wasn't going to pay for any of the other pages just the homepage to start me off so it looks like I chose the correct page.  So it would be very important to me to get the look of the homepage right and as long as that is good then it will entice people and keep them there.  Thanks for the advice Kyle.
