Search engine optimization describes what SEO is.  If you want to hire a professional SEO then you need to research all the possible benefits as well as the damage that a SEO can do to your site.  Before deciding that you want to use a professional SEO become knowledgeable about how search engines work.  If you have decided to hire a professional SEO the sooner the better and you will want to ask some questions.  Ask if they can show you previous work and testimonies from people who have used their services before.  Also ask their experience in the industry and whether they can give you references.  A SEO will use the website’s content in the best possible way so it is easily found by Google, Yahoo, MSN, etc.  They will design the website in such a way to draw search engine spiders whilst improving the site’s ranking for relevant keywords.  This will improve the volume and quality of traffic you receive at your website.  The benefit of having a highly ranked website is that more searchers will visit your website.

Keep in mind, too, what kind of website you have while doing your research. For example, is it a dynamic website for products? Or is it a static website that gets updated manually? Perhaps you use a Content Management System in order to more easily maintain the website.

Some of these will present inherent challenges, like not having control of using keywords or anything beyond query information in your URL. If a person or company specializes in SEO and has a good track record, they will have come across these issues before and know how best to work within the confines and make the SEO program a success.

This is an awesome question... But unfortunately, the industry is so new that there really is not a definitive answer. There is also great debate about what constitutes white hat vs black hat SEO. I've seen some really amazing posts recently where people are arguing that everything related to SEO is black hat if you think about it.

I happen to believe that the terms white hat and black hat, which were borrowed from the Internet security industry, are completely inappropriate for the search engine optimization industry. Hacking into a computer and trying to influence search engine results are really very different things.. But that's where we are today...
