Google's ranking methods are becoming more human-like every year. Websites are no longer ranked based upon keyword count and sneaky SEO tricks alone. Google tracks metrics such as depth of visit and length of visit with relation to keywords to determine if the average user finds the website content useful.

The fact of the matter is that you must work hard to satisfy the end user. Develop quality content, make your website user-friendly and offer value and substance to your visitors.

I read that Google is starting to exclude directories in the PR algorithm as well, because they normally have no true content.

Has anyone else heard this?

Yes, agreed. I see so many web site developers who are looking for the magic trick to get traffic and revenue.  The truth is you need to offer people something and they'll return.

Exaclty...if you have something of value to offer people, they will patronize your site or accept your services. There's no work-around for quality content, and eventually we'll have to give in and accept that our rankings will more adequately reflect the character of the sight, rather than tricks.

Since quality should be at the top of the list for web content, it seems that focusing on numbers is a big mistake.  Rather than thinking about page rank, people need to think about what they offer and let things develop naturally.

Well, that's the thing.  People focus all about SEO, but then you look at their site, and it's an unusable mess.  You have to make a product, basically, that people will want before you advertise it.

So in the long run, marketing is actually more important than page rank because the actual goal is attracting quality visitors and not just anyone who will click a link?
