I have looked around MySpace a few times, placed classified ads and blogged a little on the site, but fail to see any results that are worthy of the effort.

Is there a technique that I am missing that makes using social networks a worthwhile marketing venue?

I think it really just depends on what you are trying to use it for. What types of classified ads did you post, and what was the purpose of the blogs?

I believe that the main reason why it is such a a worthwhile means of marketing is due to the fact that many people have the potential of seeing it. You can also make friends with people on Myspace, etc. who will then see your service, and the more people you add as friends, the more people know you and what you're doing.

I think MySpace is so swamped now that it's a complete waste of time to try market yourself or your product/service there. Yes, there's lots of people but that also means they have a gazillion other people's profiles to look at apart from yours.

Your time would probably be better spent finding a niche forum/group (if possible) that attracts people interested in the area your product or service relates to, and building yourself up there by genuinely helping out and getting to know people.

Trust and respect take time to earn but is worth the effort when next time they need something that you can provide, you're the first one they think of to ask.

Just an opinion.

It really just depends on your own niche and how you're using it. There are definite results to be found in social networking, but maybe MySpace isn't the one for you.

I agree with Serenity Myspace gets overlooked because there is so much competition on it.  If you are well known on Myspace then maybe it is worth it, but to get well known you have to spend a lot of time on there so it might not be worth the effort.  If you put more effort into Myspace then other areas of your business will suffer.  It might be worth paying for a few good types of marketing and then stick with them.  Also paidsurfing is good and traffic websites.
