I have seen sites with urls and domains that are totally different from their titles.  Doesn't this reduce the likelihood of the site being picked up in a search?

Not really.  Domain name recognition is more or less targeted at the users (in remembering your URL).

I don't think that it really reduces the probability of it being picked up under a search, but it's kind of a pet peeve of mine. It's something that has always kind of bothered me.

I had heard that the domain's matching the subject of the site made a difference in the likelihood of the site being picked up on a search on top of making the association between the url and the site's name easier to remember.

There are so many opinions that things get a little confusing.  I guess it's best to go with one's gut feeling.

Whether a search engine did pick up a site because the Subject didnt match the url, it's something that puts me off. It seems very unprofessional to have subject matter completely different from the url.

Some people who are into developing and selling domains try to use 3 or 4 letters as the domain name.  It allows more flexibility when it's time to sell.

^ yes. about that issue, i was never interested with 3 or 4 letter domain names,
especially if the characters were combined too randomly.
like: hrlq, ftye, fryu, etc. etc. they can even confuse visitors at times.

Re: Tag's post, sure, if the website is flyfishing.com and it's about casinos, that makes no sense.  But there are many multiple- or general-interest sites or sites with nonsense domain names that succeed.

Reviewer,

Aren't multiple or general interest sites picking up a content and keyword somewhere that goes with the domain name?  IF they are really general then it seems it would be easy to create relevancy between domain and content.

I don't think it would affect to be picked by any search engine. But if you are more particular in having all be in one form then it is better to have everything put up perfectly and professionally to maintain the picking probability by a search engine.

You are probably right, ammulu.  It's better to focus on one area.  It saves effort and the quality of the traffic is much better.

Yeah SageMother, to gain quality of the traffic it is better to have perfection to increase the probability.
