Posted:  15 Oct 2007 20:56
the church just started and it wants a website. It's a small church so the pastor asked me to "volunteer". I have dreamweaver but I'm not a programmer. I can do the basic stuff but the thing i really wanted to do is a mailing list. i tried looking up how to do this but I couldn't find any good instructions.

I have Microsoft access that i can use as a database, and as i said, I have dreamweaver. can anyone tell me how i could do a mailing list? thanks.

What features does the hosting company include with the church's package?  Sometimes the mailing list database can be set up on the hosting service and step by step instructions are provided.

Mailing lists are typically something you'll buy software for, because you need a way for people to be able to interact with the database (and opt-out).  Google for mailing list software - much easier than trying to cobble it together.

The hosting service I use has mailing lists as one of the options included with the hosting service.  Maybe finding a new host would take care of the mailing list problem.

That's a good point - many hosting services do offer this.  In addition, you can look as something like MailChimp that offers the service separately.

You could also use Yahoo groups to do your mailing list.  It is the simplest way to do it when you're just starting out.  You can easily link back to the website as well.

The thing to remember if you do use Yahoo Groups is to be careful of spammers leaving messages. Your settings should be "Messages from new members require approval" to be on the safe side, at least initially to weed them out. The fact that it'd be a church group wouldn't inhibit them unfortunately.

Hopefully it is a proper Christian Church.  You don't say either way so I feel a little unsure what information to give to you.  You see, there are Christian sites that have been set up for Christian Churches, but it has to be a real God serving Church and not some other type of so called Church.  If you let me know then I can give you the information and might be able to help you with setting it up and show you my Church website so you have an idea of the type of website that can be set up for a Church.

Okay, I'm a bit confused by your response, Mickie. What difference does it make what kind of church it is? The setup, software, etc, could be used for just about anything.

Unfortunately, some folks are a bit smug about their religious beliefs, and consider themselves one of the few true believers.

Frankly, this isn't the place for proselytizing.  Let's just help folks with their web site development, ok?

Apparently Reviewer thinks he knows it all now!  Just because I happen to mention about Christianity because obviously this post is about asking of setting up a Church.  The reason why I mentioned about Christianity is because the website I know that gives free websites only gives them to people who are setting up a Christian only site.  O.k?  So when you next mention that I am smug you ought to remember that this is a website about SEO and not religion and I did not start the conversation.  So next time you presume you know what somebody is talking about Reviewer maybe it would be good if you actually read the post properly!
