I am currently polishing my Alt tag theories. There are two ways I might deem alt tags as spam. The first is spamming a single tag...

alt "SEO, Search Engines, SEO, SEO, etc"

The second spam method involves using several alt tags on the same page containing your major keywords or phrases. If I were going to use one of these methods I would feel safer using the latter as shown here...

alt "SEO"
alt "seo"
alt "SEO"

In either example I would stay away from anything even remotely considered as keyword spamming. It might work in the short term, but Google with eventually weed out every form of spam, and it's not worth the possibility of making it on Google's blacklist.

I would like to hear other opinions on this issue.

Ugh, I HATE spammed alt tags because users do actually see them and it screams bad form to me.  Make them descriptive.

I think it's tacky and devalues the service or product that is the subject of the page or site.

I don't think that a service or company should spam using tags. I think that it does devalue it and makes the company or service seem cheap, and something that I do not want to be a part of.

That is a great idea, slingshot.  I, myself, hate spam.  It is not only annoying but can be pornographic as well.  I really do not need to learn about lengthening certain parts of a man's anatomy.  So that information is good to know, thank you.

I don't think I've ever came across image alt tags used in that manner Slingshot or if I did, I didn't notice it.

Would it still be considered just as bad to put your website's name there? I'm thinking that I've seen ones where it said "image xyz brought to you by (insert website name here)". Never crossed my mind that it looked like spam doing that.

I don't think that alt tags should be spammed either.  Alt tags are essential for websites to improve their search engine position.  Spamming just makes the organisation look completely unprofessional.

If I remember right the reason for img alt tags in the first place was for accessibility so that someone who was vision impaired would still know what the picture was of from the description in the img alt tag.

It just doesn't seem right to take advantage of a function like that and use it purely for self-promotion imho.

I would honestly never even notice because I don't ever see the text, but I don't think it's appropriate for users to abuse tags like that.

Alt tags should be descriptive. I like to use three words or less and attempt to use keywords whenever possible and applicable.

I'm not sure if Google has algorithmic rules in place that look for alt tag spamming tactics.

Yeah I agree that alt tags should be descriptive that ways it gives you more of a chance of moving up the search results more quickly and people will notice you more.
