I'm looking for a way for more viewer participation to my site - for example, commenting, voting, or that sort of thing. Does anyone have any links to a how-to for something like that?

What exactly is the niche of your site? What do you want viewers to participate, vote, or comment on?

Some people swear by contests.  The problem is coming up with the activity or item to be judged.

Contests are a great way to get people to participate, if there is a good prize in store for the winner, usually. There are so many different contests too. You can get viewers to design logos, etc. I think those work pretty well.

How about a scavenger hunt?

You could choose or insert something into your site and then have a prize for finding either the phrase or item once, or for an accurate count of the number of times it appears in your site...sort of like guessing the number of beans in a jar.

It will get people actually looking through your site which will lengthen their visit.

Good one, SageMother. I think a scavenger hunt would hit the spot right on. If you are looking to get people to look around your site, a scavenger hunt would take care of just that.

Glad I could help!  Scavenger hunts tend to stimulate the desire for more scavenger hunts, just as shopping can stimulate the desire to shop more.  You might get a lot of mileage from them.

I had never thought about scavenger hunts leading to a desire for more, but the shopping example helped to make sense. I know that people love to compete, and I think that competition can be addictive.

Specifically, what I'm looking for is instructions or software to add commenting or voting to pages of my site (like, say, blogs have).

Ah okay, I understand now. Your first post was kind of ambiguous, and could have been interpreted a couple of different ways. I'm really not sure about software though.

I guess I was going in the wrong direction there, LOL.  As far as software, you should try looking at Source Forge first.  Finding something suitable at no cost is always immediate profit!

Depend on the kind of functionality you want you can find some rather simple Javascript programs that could do the job, there are hundreds of Javascript libraries floating around the internet.

JavaScript is good if you program it correctly.  But, too many people do not and it messes with your system real good.

That's quite true, the handy thing about Javascript though is the majority of it can be cut and paste without many issues. It does display differently in different browsers though which can cause a lot of compatability issues.
