I heard that meta tags are dying off really and in a little while, we won't even be using them.

Yes, I have heard the same.  Because of abuse, they do not seem to be a good way for search engines to deliver sites with relevance.

i've read the same thing, too. from a lot of sites.
still, most of my sites' meta tags are well-customized.
just in case... all these are just theories, right?

I have been fooling around with the free version of WebCEO and it makes suggestions that are pretty good.  The only issue I have is that there are so many ways people suggest setting up meta tags.  Some say you can use over 100 and then other places say nothing more than 15.

Is there a good number to aim for or is it a crap shoot?

i get advises that i should limit the words i put on them,
which i think makes sense...
it's like concentrating into a limited area,
instead of distributing your efforts to hundred others.

I think I will take the advice and then scatter other keywords throughout the content.  That way I can have fun writing and figuring out how to make it all flow nicely!

I too heard that Meta tags are dying but it is used mainly to load a page with some relevant keywords and search engines shouldn't have any problem now as it is just sliced and the required page is generated.

Just remember that trends can reverse themselves when someone figures out how to make them profitable.  I am in the habit of placing meta tags on my sites and will keep the habit.

SageMother is right.  If I were you I would listen to her.  You can take a look at anything in history and find that it repeats itself.  The best example I can tell you about has nothing to do with business.  That is the length of the men's hair.  Centuries back men wear their hair long, then short became the style and now either style is acceptable.  I know that has nothing to do with business but the principle is the same.

I would keep meta keywords under 30.  Even a general site should have some focus.  I think people having 500 keywords are the reason that search engines are shying away from using keywords to list sites.

Who in their right mind would use over 500 keywords?  That seems a little over doing it to me.  I, my self, would not use more than 20 keywords.  I think it would be hard to come up with more than 20 as it is.

Even I have heard the same that Meta tags are not always required. But it is always better to take the advantage of them and to simply discard them .

They may be dying off, but they're not extinct yet. There's no reason to not continue using them until they're completely phased out or their usage is altered significantly.

I have to admit, I don't know much about META tags but then i'm new to SEO in general. Can anyone explain them to me?

You have to be careful with the way you set up meta tags.  I would say that you shouldn't really use too many. I would keep using them till they become extinct because there is always a chance they might bring something similar out that works better or offers more benefits to the user.
