A few of the more popular blogs like Copyblogger, saw their pr drop dramatically over the last 2 days because, true to form, Google has added another no-no to their algorithm.  Apparently they don't want sites that sell link space at the top of the heap.

It feels like Google is slowly making itself obsolete as it tries to become the only advertising option online for those who look at pr as the holy grail.

Do you think there will be an exodus toward other traffic building and advertising methods if this keeps up?

Selling link-space does hurt PageRank's effectiveness for finding popular content.  On the flip side, it's another blow to people starting up.

I don't think this will make users move though.  It benefits users and is restrictive with publishers.

Well it won't make those using Adsense for income move, but some of the blog networks are popular enough that they can ignore Google and run through on their own inertia.  Since the blogs are niche oriented, Google will be less important.

Apparently two things have altered the Adsense equation.

First, PayPerPost, which is one of those places that sells comments, I think has come up with its own rating system for blogs, now.  This removes the need to use Google's as a "limiting reagent".

Second, Google has changed how it will recognize qualified clicks.  For a click to be qualified, it has to be right on the words in the ad square.  Not on the background, not just close by, even though those clicks will probably go through to the advertisers site.

I wonder what they might come up with next.  It's simply fascinating to watch the gyrations!

even personal blogs are affected by this, too.
so if ever you'll be accepting any writing job for your blog,
do not label it as "sponsored post/sponsor" or any other tag which can give a hint to google that your entry is a paid one.
make it look more natural.
also, as much as possible, only accept jobs which are somehow related with your blog.

I'm am very excited about Google's efforts to discredit paid links. Organic SEO should be about more than just the size of your wallet. I like to think of it as an art and a science. SEO involves creativity with regards to content, substance, value and design.

Agreed.  Paid links do nothing to filter for quality content for users or to give a true impression of popularity.

annerz,

That's good to know.  I ghost for a blog and enjoy the work and the pay is nice.  Do you think Goolge thumps entries labeled as "guest" blogger?  I have a feeling that, if they don't mind now, they will change the tos to exclude sites using guests as well!

LOL...fun fun!

reviewer,

I agree that the filtering isn't there.  What will probably happen is those who will continue to use paid links, because they don't wish to be told how to run their sites, will form a separate system much like adult sites have.

It will take time for the adjustment to set in, but I don't think paid links and entries are going away.
