At my company, there is somewhat of a difference of opinion regarding alt tags.  One person claims all images should have them, but others claim that users don't notice.  What about you - does it impact how you view a company's professional website?

Alt tags seem to become an issue for the casual surfer when the image won't load.  For me, if a large company's images don't load I think a lot less of the business as a whole. If the site belongs to a small, at home business, I am much more forgiving.

Even if alt tags are good for search engines, their being visible is a sign that something is terribly wrong.

LOL

if your sites are hosted on a good server, and has 100% uptime (which means all your content loads properly),
then alt tags should be your least priority. lol

seriously though, yes. they are just still important.

They are useful for people using browsers that don't display images. This can be for blind people or web surfers that don't want to load images for faster web surfing. That's why we have alt tags, but they can also be useful to explain images similar to captions. I've noticed that Firefox does not display alt text on image rollover, but IE7 does.

I have found captions more satisfying than alt tags.  On my own sites, the caption and the alt tag are links to the product page!

IMO, I think the alt tags are useful if they are used correctly.  Yes, they help people who are blind and don't allow images to be loaded in their browser.  But, if they are used correctly, they can help to inform the user about the company in a more personal way.  Letting the person know that the company cares about what they think.

They don't effect me as a 'viewer', but they effect me as a 'searcher'. Alt tags tend to get better categorized in image results, so I can usually find images quicker and faster, which is great for me.

Basically it allows websites user to make the best use of the image ALT tags to improve the sites's search engine ranking.

We were taught in college that alt tags are VERY important for accesability and every image should have them. If a blind person is using a text to speech protocal then the alt tag is what is read out when an image is supposed to be displayed.

It seems there is a mixture of feelings about alt tags and I suppose that just reflects personal choice.  Some people are more favourable over key words and others alt tags.  I don't think it matters what you chose as long as you can work it.
