Writing good copy that is in-line with good Search Engine Optimization practices can be difficult. Developing content for Blogs is one thing, but what about when you're trying to sell a product or service?
Some web designers might ask their clients to write content, others with larger budgets will hire an ad agency, but most web design clients will give a little input and hope that the web designer can come up with something. I've researched marketing and copy writing enough to have a good idea of how to start developing content for almost any website.
A website is like an infomercial. You have to catch the attention of the reader. Explain 'Benefits' rather than 'Features' of a product or service. Too much content can overwhelm your visitors. I personally like 'read more' links at the end of a paragraph to allow the visitor to read more information on a topic if they desire. This gives a good first impression and doesn't overwhelm the visitor with content. It's my understanding that Google gives each page credit for the first 250 words of content on each page, so why add more information on your homepage?
As good as well written content can be, images still play a huge roll. It's still true that a 'picture can say a thousand words'. Simple graphics that demonstrate a product or service can keep a visitor interested.
I would like to hear opinions on this topic!? __________________

Is there an optimal number of times your keyword tags should appear in the body of each page?

Keywords should appear not more than 2.5% of the overall content and yes the content must be related to the site theme. Original content on wrong theme won't give you any sort of benefit in search engine rankings, infect it can hurt your search engine position.

So not more than 2 out of one hundred words should be keywords...for the whole site or on each page?

Have to agree with you there about the necessity of a great picture, graph or other eye catching image- an absolute must.
People read, digest and then finally use information in very different ways so to have an effective webpage one needs to know whom their potential customer is...and target them specifically.
Either that or you need to multi-target with various content styles, format and keywords, etc.
That's what I have found- anyway!

2.5% keyword density you have to maintain on your site, it is not related with pages, you can have this ratio on all pages which represent content.

It helps to remember that most people scan text online, which is different from reading it.
This means paragraphs have to be very short and come right to the point, with images set to draw the eye diagonally, if I remember correctly.

I know I certainly scan most things I get online, rather than read them in-depth, but if I find an interesting article I'll settle down and plunge right in. It really depends on the content you have, I suppose, and the message you're trying to send across...but I think if you have good content, your readers will pay more attention.

Personally for me as well as visually attracting my eye to the page with color, pics and an appealing "feel" to the site- the main thing to grasp my attention is what the writer of the article says in the opening phrase- if it's boring, off topic or just poorly written...I'm out of there!
Keeping my attention after that- well that's another story again! Want to know more?

Are there any good tools to determine keyword density? Something that could, for example, scan my text and show me the keywords that Google would pick up?

Are online keyword density programs any worse than software you can purchase> Web Ceo is popular with many but it's very expensive! I would like something easy on the wallet but very effective. wallet.

I think I saw IBP10 advertised on the Freewebs site under "get traffic" or something similar. I guess I need to find the time to check it out. You are the first person I have seen mention it.

I am reaching the point where I leave a site if there are too many videos. I would rather watch something like that on TV or YouTube in a rare mood. They tend to eat up more time than I am willing to spend.

I hate sites that overuse video - video articles, and that sort of thing. I like to be able to read and reading is faster and easier to search through than video.

This article has really helped me rethink the content on my homepage, at least for my latest site. I am reworking that first 250 words to have the most punch, then having a few details in columns below that first paragraph, so that things aren't to bare.

The first few words of any page capture or lose my interest. Also I tend to skip pages that have annoying colour combinations, too many ads, pics or videos. Short, simple & effective is best.

Those flash intro movies just irritate me through and through. The next thing that bothers me when it comes to content, is music that plays automatically and then having to search to find a way to turn it off!

I agree that a good combination of both words and graphics are needed for a good website. Especially if it is a website is selling a product or a service. Pictures of products that are available allow a customer to see what they are buying as if they were an actual store. Pictures of a service will show a potential customer what will occur when receiving that service. The words that go along with the images should be clear, short and concise. __________________
