I have dabbled in these, periodcally, to get things going when I had very little money for other forms of advertising.  Are there secrets to making this type of traffic builder work?

It seems these programs are good for traffic but not for conversions.

Well I think it really comes down to what link exchange networks your involved with.  Also, a direct link exchange with a popular site can help you just as much.

Yes but you also have to be careful with link exchanges.  I know someone who had a link exchange going with several other related sites and one of these sites was hijacked.  All of a sudden, the link led to pornographic material.  So if you use links sites, make sure the links are good!

It really depends, link exchange sites tend to work only if the two partners have a site that shares a similar subject. In which case, whichever site is better is going to do better from the link exchange and the site that's the lesser of the two, is going to loose out. It's really a dangerous business.

I tend to agree that it's difficult to turn them into conversions unless you have a specific niche and are focusing only on exchanging with people in that niche, too. I suppose for some sites it may work well, but for the most part, I haven't had much success with them.

Does anyone have any more experience using these? I would leave to hear some more as perhaps i'm wrong about them and they actually are useful.
