I know that Google suggests that you use search engine friendly urls, but I've noticed that Google and Yahoo index urls generated by my PHP scripts. I'm still trying to figure out whether or not this has that much affect on search engine rankings. If so, then which search engines care about this? If anyone figures this out before I do, then I'd love to hear thoughts on this SEO topic.

I have been wondering what a search engine friendly url actually is.  It sounds like a url that includes a common search term, but it could address the actual length of thee url.

I can't wait to find out!

SEO friendly url means keyword based urls, like if you have a page such as www.yourdomain.com/p.php?t=123
it won't be considered as SEO friendly url
And if it is like www.yourdomain.com/your-keyword.php
then it will be called SEO friendly.
However there is no different as for as the search engines are concerned for ranking point of view (most people have the same opinion)

You mean we ought to have some real words instead of just a bunch of numbers & letters after our main domain name? That shouldnt be too difficult.

Well, if you have a series of letters or numbers I bet the search engine just moves the the content of the page.  The extra step might make a difference with indexing.

In general SEO friendly URL's tend to be based on letters and keywords rather than code or numbers as a SEO deals with that much better.

Most definitely!  But make sure that your keywords are as unique as possible.  For examples you have a real estate site, find something unique to go with real estate as a keyword.
