It's big news that Yahoo is laying off workers, http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20080130/ap_on_hi_te/earns_yahoo ,  to stem the hemorrhage that social networks have created in their profit margin.  I don't know about anyone else, but I am hoping we soon see the same sort of exodus taking affect with Google.

With this in mind, have you started tweaking your site to take advantage of Yahoo's desperation?  Do you think Yahoo will loosen some of its requirements for advertisers to under cut Google's Adsense program?

Anything is possible.  It would definitely make Yahoo stocks go up if they started using something similar to Google's Adsense.  Then again, competition is good for everyone isn't it?

Yep, competition is good for the consumers and that creates lower rates and better benefits for the end users.

I've never been a big fan of Yahoo in terms of trying to buy keywords and how big sites can basically pay for top spots.  I wouldn't be surprised if they went the opposite way and started charging more for services.

Neither do I.  The way the economy is right now everybody's increasing their prices.  It's just a sign of the times.

I am sure that Yahoo have enough money that they do not need to lay off workers'.  I would hope that big organisations such as Yahoo and Google would provide employment opportunities to many people.

Yahoo are already under the big names site they don't need to change anything.  As for undercutting Google I would say this is merely keeping up with competition and is C'est La Vie in the business world.

If Yahoo do start charging more for their services then it will probably back fire and lose them business unless they can bring something wonderfully unique and beneficial to their consumers'.

While I agree that it would be good for Yahoo to loosen it's advertising requirements in order to compete with google adsense and that the competition would benefit many, I doubt that Yahoo is truly desperate.  As Mickie said they are so large they are probably doing it as a precaution, not because the 'have to.'  I doubt they will change their their traditional business practices.

I agree with you mom2manyboyz I mean Yahoo is a big fish they have more money than they let people know.  Some people say stuff for the publicity even if it is not true.  If it gets their name mentioned then it gets more hits to their website.

I see Microsoft withdrew their bid for Yahoo today, saying that Yahoo's demands didn't make sense. Whether it's a ploy and they'll come back later with another one remains to be seen but Yahoo don't seem exactly fazed by  it. It makes me wonder if they've got something up their sleeve that they intend to plow the savings from the layoffs into.

I saw the withdrawal, too. I think Microsoft will be back again at some point, but I have no idea what the heck Yahoo is up to.

A big company like Yahoo wouldn't lay its staff off for nothing.  There must be a reason behind it.  Maybe they are losing money or maybe it has got something to do with them having something up their sleeve that they need the money for.  Either way it is not kind on the employers they have made reduntant and they better have a good excuse or they will lose their reputation full stop.
