With so many automatic coding programs/editors, most people don't seem to know how to code something from scratch. Do you think people should understand the languages more or is it okay to rely on outside programs to do the bulk of the work?

In my view understanding the languages is a must before we rely on outside programs totally. It would be of use not just now but also in the nearest future.

Coding by hand means to code without any assitance from programs. But that does'nt mean that one should not be aware of programs. To do coding by hand one should be a good programer.

I code my hand mostly. I use Dreamweaver to set the basic template quite a lot of the time but I always edit the XHTML and the CSS to suit the site I want. If you don't code by hand then you can't get your site EXACTLY the way you want it.
