Increasingly I seem to see this.

Someone registers for a forum not as a plain username or whatever, but with their website name as their registered name, .com and everything included.

e.g. joebloggs.com is their handle instead of just JoeBloggs.

Is this a good tactic or not? Personally I don't like it and for some reason it irks me to see it being used but why do people do it?

Does it have anything to do with having your website name linked to places with high page rankings? Your profile name would most likely be a clickable link on most forums. So does that count then as that site giving you a thumbs up in Google's eyes because the spiders would see that as them linking to your site name, ie giving you a backlink?

I can't quite figure it out and am uncertain I explained that well but I tried. Hope someone gets what I'm asking.

I don't like the idea of including the .com, but I see nothing wrong with going by your site's name. Better yet, make sure it's included in signatures because 'those' do count in Google from sites that have it set to follow.

I have seen that on other forums.  I don't know if it would help on the SEO process at all.

I didn't come across any of such names on forums till date, but surely it isn't a good idea to have this .com in their name.

Yes, signature links are effective, Kitten, that's true indeed. It just seems too impersonal to me to be talking to someone on a forum and referring to them by their site name. I think that's what I dislike about it.

ammulu, you can bet you'll see it now I've mentioned it lol.

I know what you mean.  I use a nickname it's not my real name, but a nickname after my favourite cartoon in the world Micky Mouse.  The 31 reflects my age not that I should give that away, but don't you think using nicknames is just the same because it's not revealing who you are.  I wouldn't want to give my true name to anyone because it would be too personal.

I don’t have anything anyone using their site’s name because for me this is a way for their site to get more recognition.  I’m also thinking of doing it one of these days.

I see what Chocoguy means about being able to promote the site, but I can also see what Serenity means about it being impersonal.  I mean imagine talking to someone called www.slingshotseo.com it's a bit of a mouthful isn't it?

No, no. You would be talking to someone named Slingshot or SlingShotSEO. Hey, Slingshot sounds like a cool name anyway and it'd help me remember their site. It wouldn't be the full url, though.

Finally, I did come across such ID's and they seemed to be really weird. I didn't like such an idea as it wouldn't be of that much help to gain traffic. I think we shouldn't be trying to gain such traffic and on other side spamming too.

Ah Slingshot actually sounds a rather cool name actually.  Yeah I'm getting it now.  Duh! LOL!

Is someone having the name Slingshot? I came across some forums where people had their Email ID's as the user name, sounds somehow not normal to me. I generally use my pet name.

I think if I was running a forum site I would ask them to not use a .com in their name. I wouldn't mind it in a sig at all. but if they use it as a name it would make me feel like they were only on my site to advertise their own site.

I see what you mean Hurgoll.  Whilst it is good to advertise your website it isn't exactly what you want.  You want someone on your site who wants to be there and not just to advertise.  Sometimes people can make a mess of your site when they try to advertise all the time.  I have a website for people suffering from anxiety and stress disorders and we got this person on it once who was advertising a dating site and never took part in the discussions.  I had to ban her eventually.
Posted:  14 Jun 2008 07:10
That's the kind of person you want to ban immediately. It's not worth your time and frustration of them using you!
Posted:  14 Jun 2008 23:50
Yeah your right Kitten I was probably a bit too lenient.  I mean why join an anxiety and stress disorder group to advertise a dating website.  Some people would try anything!

There are certain sites which allow advertising, I feel such people should feel free and better to advertise on such sites rather than scamming other sites, especially your site Mickie that's related to anxiety and stress disorders. Advertising dating sites on such peculiar sites should not be spared. Good you finally banned her.

That is just a regular thing on digitalpoint.  I am not bothered by that.  Maybe it has something to do with being exposed to it all the time.
