Google Indexing Embedded Facebook and How It Affects You

by David Tittle

For those of you who haven’t heard, Matt Cutts has stated that Google is now capable of indexing embedded Facebook comments.  This was later confirmed by labnol.org’s Amit Agarwal.  How do they do this, and why is it important?

How they do it

Most web crawlers work by simply downloading the html of a web page and pulling out the text.  Makes sense, right?  No need to parse images and complex JavaScript, when the most relevant content is probably just text on the page.  There is one problem, though.  Some pages use iframes (basically, a window to another web site), which effectively show up as links, rather than content.  In addition to this, certain pieces of text on a page might be generated by JavaScript.  This makes it more difficult for a web crawler.

Our Innovation Task Force & Its Role at Slingshot SEO

by David Tittle

What does innovation mean? This was a question posed to us by Aaron Aders, our co-founder and Chief Operation Officer. While many of us innovate without much thought, we aren’t typically tasked with defining what innovation means to us. What does it mean to us as individuals? What does it mean to us as professionals in our industry? To answer these questions, Aders has formed what we call the Innovation Task Force.

  • How do we do it?
  • How do we hide it?
  • How do we sell it?

What is the real problem?

Google Realtime Search, Wonder Wheel dropped in first “makeover”

by David Tittle

Over the last few weeks, Google has released a number of big updates.  Most notably has been the Google +1 Button (Plus One) and the Google + (Google Plus) social network.  In the shadow of these updates, Google has removed some of their features in preparation of their user experience/site design changes.  Two of these include the Wonder Wheel and Google Realtime.  For those of you who are unfamiliar with these features, let’s review.Google's Wonder Wheel

A Review of the Past

Google Realtime displayed a series of Twitter updates as a constant stream, “…as (they) became available.”  It was also displayed as a column in the News area.  This is understandable, as the deal between Twitter and Google ended on July 2nd.   The last update of the @googlerealtime account was a link to Danny Sullivan’s article at Search Engine Land.  Vanessa Fox reports that Google spokesperson Gabriel Stricker contacted Search Engine Land, stating that the disabling of Google Realtime is only temporary, in an effort to incorporate its features into Google+. Server and Network Configuration Can Affect Your Ranking

by David Tittle

Here at Slingshot SEO, when we talk about “on page” factors, what we really mean is, “factors that are under our control.” Usually, this means re-wording your title tag, editing headers and structuring content. While these are important, the most obvious factor can be overlooked: If Google cannot get to your web page, you will not rank. Web server configuration is often overlooked in favor of content and functionality, but it can have a dramatic effect on how well you rank.

Know your server admin. Make sure your server has one person dedicated to monitoring its status on a regular basis. This means checking server logs and receiving messages when the server is under stress. Can you name this person at your organization? Make time today to ask them how things are running. Read more »
